My feet may be killing me the day after wearing heels all day, but my heart is happy, and I can't wait to go back.Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. After a bit of searching in the dark, we eventually found him and made our way back to Cambridge. We ordered our taxi, deciding not to wait at the rank due to the queues, and as per the bus driver's helpful instructions earlier, asked him to park up and come and meet us. It had been an incredible day and definitely something I'd look at doing again. Everyone was dancing and having a great time.Īfter the final race, drinks were allowed into the enclosure, so I made a cheeky trip to grab myself a mojito, coming back in time to boogie the night away to FRIENDS. I've seen her live three times previously, and I'm always impressed by her vocal talent live on stage. Introduced by Cambridgeshire radio legend Kev Lawrence, Anne-Marie was incredible. I even heard a child asking the adult they were with when they could go to the stage to try and get right to the front - about three hours before the last race. Unfortunately tempers did flare once or twice, as is to be expected in a tense environment fuelled by alcohol and sunshine, but things were calmed down pretty quickly.Īnne-Marie performing at Newmarket Nights (Image: ANGIE SMITH / THE JOCKEY CLUB LIVE)Īs the racing drew to an end, a few people began to leave who didn't seem overly interested in the concert, but there were definitely people there who were there for Anne-Marie and Anne-Marie only. Wandering around, everyone was friendly and in a good mood, partly thanks to the copious amount of alcohol that was flowing - there were hen parties, old friends having a catch up, families and those who were really there for the racing, as opposed to the day out. We found a brilliant cocktail bar, with music and really fun staff who were so friendly, with each cocktail setting you back around £12-13. I've spent a lot of time at concerts, even paying an eye-watering £8 for a pint of Magners, of all things (looking at you MK Dons stadium.), so three pints coming to just shy of £20 didn't feel like the end of the world. In terms of prices, I was honestly expecting to be stung a lot more. It makes sense, but it does mean you're constantly back and forth, and with limited seating for the number of attendees there was a lot of wandering around trying to find somewhere to sit - not ideal in heels. But for those who did, it was easy enough to do with so many of the Tote kiosks meaning that queues were relatively short - the same with the bars.Ĭonsidering you're there to watch the races, it was a bit of a pain that you weren't allowed to take any food or drink through to the enclosures - not even water on a hot day. I'm not a betting person, so I didn't partake - even though I now think maybe I should've just popped a tenner on, when in Rome and all that. It was great to be able to get up so close to the horses (Image: CambridgeshireLive)

It was nice to see a celebration of local brands - such as Aspall which had its own bar. We had access to the Premier area of the course, with food stalls and bars everywhere you turned.

Absolutely adamant that wouldn't be happening, I mentally prepared myself for the cost of a taxi back to Cambridge.
#CAMBRIDGE WHATSON DRIVER#
Some came on in full three piece suits, or dressed as though they were attending a rather posh wedding, others just seemed to be in casual dresses or even tshirts.Īs we pulled up to the course the driver let us know about travel arrangements for the way back - if you wanted to make the last train back to Cambridge you'd have to leave the concert early. Watching people get on the bus, I was starting to question the dress code, and whether I would be dressed appropriately. Read more: See if you can spot yourself in photos of Cambridge Folk Festival day two We were there in about 25 minutes and managed to hop straight on one of the complimentary shuttle buses to take us to the course. The journey there was really easy, especially on a brand new Greater Anglia train. So I went panic-shopping for an appropriate outfit, and hopped on the train from Cambridge station. At least, this is what I had in mind as I made my way to Newmarket on Friday, July 29.īeing a music lover, I couldn't miss out on the opportunity to see one of my favourite artists, Anne-Marie, perform live just half an hour down the road from me. When you think of a day at the races, you think ladies in fascinators, gents in top hats, and overall a very fancy experience.
